ISLAMABAD - Test discarded premier fast bowler Umar Gul has declared himself fully fit and said his services like past are always available to the national team.

Gul, who had served Pakistan cricket for more than 13 years, in an exclusive interview to The Nation at his residence on Tuesday, said it was always very entertaining to even think about serving country. “I had always played with total commitment and for keeping national flag high. I am a born fighter and always force my way back into the national squads after injuries only through performances. As a Muslim, I strongly believe in Allah Almighty and I consider if I perform well, nobody could deny me from serving Pakistan cricket again.”

Gul said he had never ever called any selector in his entire career but as he had played along with present chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, when he was the captain, he called him as he is a real gentleman and will never allow any injustice to deserving players. “He listened to my genuine concerns and promised me I am very much in plans. I wanted to know, why I am not even considered in list of 35 probable. He assured me he will look into the matter, as he was busy with Afghanistan national team and had not witnessed domestic matches. Now he is fully involved with national team and domestic season is only months away, I am sure with my performances in domestic circuit, I would be able to win a recall.”

On a question Gul said he was disappointed that he was not even considered for category C in the PCB central contract. “Yes it was highly disappointing that I was injured and the PCB completely ignored all my services and past records and just left me on my own. I was injured and needed the PCB’s support. By the grace of Allah Almighty I didn’t need financial assistance and I had never demanded that, but at least the PCB should have given me moral support.”

He said he was a straight forward person and never ever said a single word against the PCB or any other individual. “I had bowled exceptionally well in the domestic cricket and won player of the tournament award in recently concluded Ramzan Cup cricket tournament that everybody including selectors witnessed. I am bowling in full rhythm and taking cricket very seriously. I had always advocated that players should be given proper time and matches to prove his fitness. I was only given two T20 Internationals against New Zealand and then was told that selectors wanted to save me for Asia Cup, but I was never considered. One or two matches are not enough to prove fitness.”

About Muhammad Aamir’s inclusion in the national team, Gul said he had showed concerns over Aamir’s inclusion as he was with the national team during the England incident and have to suffer a lot of pain, agony and embracement for a long period. He said maybe age was main factor behind Asmir’s early return to the national squad.

When asked about Pakistan teams’ exceptional performance at Lord’s, Gul said it was tremendous victory as Pakistan played like one unit. “Misbah, although playing his first Test in England and that too as captain, never showed any signs of emotions and led from the front, while Yasir Shah was supreme. I was a bit confused that Pakistan entered with three left arm fast bowlers. In my personal opinion, all the three bowlers, Rahat, Aamir and Wahab were almost identical and either Imran Khan Senior or Sohail Khan should have been the part of the playing XI, which could have benefited Pakistan team a great deal. Anyhow, now winning first Test, Pakistan had taken psychological advantage but they must not lose the momentum as it is a long series and injuries could take its toll. I had made myself available to PCB, in case they need me. I would be willing to once again spearhead Pakistan bowling attack with same zeal and passion.”
