Democracy without certain moral standards is dysfunctional. The essence of a democratic system lies in objective moral values. In this form of government, ethical values ensure equal status of all and also protection from discrimination and exploitation.
In Pakistan, democracy has been contaminated with negative cultural myths. Derogatory remarks, passed by a minister against a woman parliamentarian provide an ample example of how disfigured democracy is in this state. These remarks which were made during a parliamentary session depict our sexual wield and discriminatory national behaviour. How can we expect such parliamentarians, who are devoid of cultural and ethical values, to act as role models for us?
