ISLAMABAD (Online) Finance Secretary Salman Siddique has said that Value Added Tax (VAT) has been abolished, adding that tax net will be broadened by introducing reforms in General Sales Tax (GST). Talking to media men here Saturday outside the parliament house, he was of the view either it was imposition of VAT or reforms in GST, both were aimed at jacking up government income. There was no need of slapping VAT if reforms in GST generate more income, he added. He went on to say that VAT was not a pre-condition slapped by IMF but increasing the income was the precondition on IMF part so that the balance of payment could be maintained. The Finance Secretary said that talks were likely to take place with IMF in the last week of next month. Suleman indicated that payment of Rs 31 billion would be made to Pakistan State Oil this month to decrease circular debt and a sum of Rs 10 billion would be paid through PEPCO.
