LAHORE - HomeNet Pakistan in collaboration with ILO organised a day long consultation with stakeholders to finalize drafting of Social Protection Bill for Home-Based workers (HBWs) in the province.

Objective of the consultation was to review implementation of policy on HBWs and finalise the drafting of legislation on social protection for HBWs in provincial context.

The Punjab Labour Department has finalised Social Protection Bill for HBWs along with policy for HBWs which was included in the women’s empowerment package announced by the Punjab CM on March 8, 2012.

At a time when Punjab government is taking innovative steps for the empowerment of women, the consultation among Provincial stakeholders is of great significance to highlight the importance of delay in the implementation of policy on Home-Based workers and legislation on Social Protection.

The Labour Department under the guidance of the Provincial Labour Secretary deliberated and later finalized the draft of the bill. The members of HBWs provincial council discussed possible mechanism for registration of HBWs in the province.

The speakers included Joint Director Labour Hassnat Javaid, the Punjab Social Welfare Deputy Secretary, Punjab Social Security Director General Sabzada Infal, Punjab Labour and Human Resource Director Tahir Manzoor Ms Ume Laila, HomeNet Executive Director Omer Khawaja.
