LAHORE – Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday directed the police and other departments concerned to take “a  strict notice of the law and order situation in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Sheikhupura”. He ordered the police to ensure that ban on aerial firing at marriages and other social functions was obeyed.

The CM said this while presiding over a high level meeting to review law and order situation in the province here at Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Monday. The meeting was attended by MNA Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, MPA Col(R) Shuja Khanzada, Chief Secretary, IG, Commissioner and DCO, Capital City Police Officer, IG Prisons, Regional Police Officers, District Police Officers and secretaries of law and information departments. While speaking on the occasion, the CM directed the police to evolve a system to compile computerized data of those staying in hotels in order to keep an eye on their activities. He also instructed to develop a software system with the cooperation of Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to keep record of the criminals. Shahbaz Sharif stressed the immediate preparation of computerized identity cards of jail prisoners and directed the IG Prisons to check usage of cellphones in jails. He said that the federal government should evolve a system which ensured protection for the witnesses in courts. The meeting was told that Punjab government had established a forensic science laboratory in the City which would help in crime investigation. The laboratory is one of the most modern forensic laboratories of the world with modern computerized facilities and equipments.

The Chief Minister emphasized the role of investigation wing and said that the departments should be vigilant in order to ensure speedy justice. While talking about the increasing crime rate in the province, the CM said that strict accountability system should be evolved in the police department which would monitor professional efficiency of the officials. He said that provision of justice would restore confidence of people in the governmental institutions for which the Punjab government was utilizing all available resources to maintain law and order situation. He directed the police department to take special notice of the incidents of abduction for ransom.

Earlier, IG Police Habibur Rehamn gave a detailed briefing to the meeting regarding the situation of law and professional efficiency of the Punjab police. The participants of the meeting put-forth various proposals for effectively controlling crimes.
