ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said Monday that ISI was an important arm of the security establishment safeguarding the national interests in consonance with the aspirations of the people of Pakistan. 
He was talking to newly-appointed DG ISI Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam who called on him on Monday morning after assuming his responsibilities.
The DG ISI thanked PM Gilani for reposing confidence in him to undertake responsibilities pertaining to the national security, the prime minister’s office said.
The premier extended his best wishes to the new DG ISI and expressed his confidence.
 that the institution would serve the national interest in the best possible manner under his leadership.
