Low female literacy rate in country regretted

FAISALABAD - Literacy rate among females is only 46 percent compared to 69 percent in males that must be increased to compete with the world, said an educationist on Tuesday.
Government College University Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Dr Zakir Hussain was paying a visit to GC Women University Madina Town, Faisalabad after taking additional charge as Vice Chancellor of GCWU. He was flanked by Director College Rana Munawar, Principal Rashida Zafar, Vice Principal Nighat Riaz, In-charge BS Programme Mrs Takhliq Ruby, Registrar Robina Zaka and other officials concerned.
The Vice Chancellor said it is need of the hour to promote education of women in order to open up new horizon of progress for the country. He pointed out literacy rate in the rural areas was only 49 percent compared to 74 percent in the urban areas.
He called for enhanced role of women in the development of the country. “If you teach a woman, you teach a family. Educated mother can provide state-of-the-art knowledge to the kids helping them to become successful person by proving their mettle in their fields,” he said. He also stressed the need to step up efforts for giving awareness among the people especially living in the backward areas regarding women education.
He lauded the steps being taken on the part of Punjab government for establishing new women universities in the province. He said the GCWU will help women get modern education. He also directed the teaching community to take more steps to hone the skills of youth which is guarantee of bright future. He called for increasing the reading habit among the students which was showing a declining trend. He vowed to take every tangible step to strengthen the infrastructure, and providing modern academic facilities.  He also inspected GCWU’s ongoing development work for the up gradation of the building, classrooms of different departments, main library, computer lab, play grounds and other part of the university.
