LOS ANGELES - A 34-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday after Longmont Police say she attacked a woman who was seven-months pregnant and cut the victim’s unborn baby girl from her womb. The baby died, but the victim is recovering in the hospital.
Longmont Police Commander Jeff Satur said the suspect - later identified as Dynel Catrece Lane - showed up at an area hospital with the deceased baby, claiming she had a miscarriage. Satur said Lane’s husband drove her to the emergency room, thinking the child was alive. He said the husband is not considered a suspect.
The ambush happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lane’s home in the 1600 block of Green Place in Longmont. Satur said Lane and the 26-year-old victim did not know each other prior to this incident. The victim was responding to a Craigslist ad for baby clothes and came alone to the home. “We’ve made some requests of Craigslist to try to freeze that account,” Satur said. “At this point, we don’t want to give away too much, because we don’t want it removed.”
Police said the victim had been beaten and stabbed in the stomach before Lane allegedly removed the unborn child. Sources tell 9NEWS there is evidence of stabbing injuries from both a knife and pieces of glass. When officers arrived on scene at the Green Place home, they could hear the mother calling for help from inside the house. She was taken to the Longmont United Hospital and underwent surgery. Police have not determined a motive. Lane has two children of her own. It’s not clear if anyone other than Lane and the victim were in the home at the time of the attack.
Lane was booked into the Boulder County Jail and is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and child abuse resulting in death. She is expected to make her first appearance in court on Thursday. More charges could be added later. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Lane’s home and searched the home throughout Wednesday evening. Police say that at 2:45 p.m. on March 18, the 26-year-old victim went to Dynel Lane’s home to answer a Craigslist ad about baby clothes.
When Lane got there, police say she stabbed the pregnant woman and cut out her womb. According to local police Commander Jeff Satur, the victim had also been beaten up. The baby did not survive. The pregnant woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated for stab wounds. She underwent surgery and is expected to survive. Soon after the attack, the pregnant woman arrived at the hospital by ambulance. Cops say that Lane later arrived at the same hospital with her husband and the fetus. The suspect told hospital staff that she had suffered a miscarriage. She was then questioned by police and arrested. Lane and the victim do not know each other.
