ISLAMABAD - The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Federal Cabinet has decided to allow marketing of Ethanol-10 motor vehicle fuel on trial basis. The ECC meeting, held at the Prime Minister Secretariat on Tuesday, was presided over by Shaukat Tarin, Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance and Economic Affairs. The decision to allow marketing of E-10 was taken to reduce import of petroleum products as much as possible. Anhydrous Ethanol (Ethanol with less than one per cent water) is a product that can be blended with gasoline in varying proportions. Most gasoline vehicle engines operate well with mixtures of 10 per cent Ethanol, called E-10. The ECC also decided to treat Ethanol-10 as motor vehicle fuel. The fuel will be available at PSO outlets. The ECC allowed OGDC to supply 20-25 MMCFD gas from its Bahu Field to M/s Fauji Kabirwala Power Company Limited, so that OGDCL could meet its contractual obligation under the existing GSA. The ECC further approved the issuance of the governments guarantee of one billion rupees for Pakistan Textile City, Karachi, for a period of two years. It may be noted that Pakistan Textile City is located in the eastern zone of the Port Qasim Authority, Karachi, on 1250 acres. It is a joint venture of the government of Pakistan and prime financial institutions. The land for the Textile City has been acquired from Port Qasim Authority (PQA) and its levelling and grading is near completion. The ECC also allowed Export Processing Zone Authority (EPZA) to provide 6 acres of land on rental basis for a period of five years while sanctioning all permissible EPZA incentives to M/s Progressive International Party Ltd, an Australia firm, for the establishment of EPZA Tech-Power Project. The ECC was informed that Pakistan would reap a very good crop of wheat this year, currently projected at 24 million tones, and would be out of low productions vicious circle. The ECC meeting while taking stock of the prices of various commodities decided not to allow hoarding of sugar at any cost for keeping its price within the reach of common man. The meeting also decided to reduce State Bank borrowings for controlling inflation in the country.
