Military on Wednesday claimed victory over a small-town Taliban stronghold in the northwest district of Buner during operations in which 80 militants were reportedly killed. "Security forces cleared Sultanwas last night after intense clashes. Reportedly 80 militants were killed," the military said in a statement. Government troops have been battling Taliban fighters around Sultanwas, a small town under Taliban control in Buner for some time. Abbas later specified that all 80 militants were killed on Tuesday. It is impossible to confirm such death tolls independently, which add up to more than 1,100 militants killed since an offensive was launched late last month. Neither has the military given any word on civilian casualties. Six vehicles belonging to militants and seven makeshift bombs were destroyed during the operations, the military said.
