Penelope Cruz struck down by 'ordinary' flu

CANNES (AFP) - Spanish star Penelope Cruz, in Cannes for the premiere Tuesday of her new film, dispelled fears she might be suffering from swine flu and said she had recovered from food poisoning. Its just the flu, normal flu, but it can make you feel sick, very sick, she told reporters when asked if she was feeling better after illness kept her from attending an earlier event at the glitzy film festival. She was speaking at a press conferefnce at which she sat next to Pedro Almodovar, director of the new film Broken Embraces which is in the running for the Palme dOr top prize. Cruz had been due to attend an event on Monday to promote another new project, a musical titled Nine which also stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard. But the films producers said she was indisposed due to food poisoning. Just hours earlier, Penelope Cruz was lying in bed sick with food poisoning. But after a day spent resting and a dose of medication, she managed to get her glow back and host a party at Cannes. The 35-year-old Oscar winner had to pull out of an appearance at a trailer screening of her movie Nine on Monday afternoon when she was struck down with a tummy bug. But she struggled out of bed to briefly attend the Hollywood Domino party on Monday night, which she was hosting. The Spanish brunette looked stunning in a floor-length white gown and matching jacket. She spent just 30 minutes at the party, which was sponsored by Akvinta vodka and aimed to raise money for her friend Bonos (Red) Aids charity. A Cannes source told Us Weekly magazine: 'She left after 30 minutes because she wasnt feeling great. 'The priority is to get better for (Tuesday) night. No one wants to lose their Cannes moment. 'She was so disappointed because she wanted to enjoy the festival. Now shes stuck in bed. After a good nights sleep last night, Penelope looked in better spirits as she attended a photocall to promote her new movie Broken Embraces on Tuesday. Although she looked gorgeous in a coloured dress, her illness had taken a toll and she appeared weary in between summoning up smiles for the photographers.
