A few pictures immortalizing the infamous 'wedding in the Presidency' event showing the President, Prime Minister and others are circulating the internet. The Presidency, true to traditions and expectations, is lavishly bedecked with flowers and other decorative arrangements. The Quaid's portrait is right at the back of the newly weds where it belongs, the national and President's flags hoisted on either side of their sofa. Fully liveried waiters with the Presidency crest adorned on their chests are seen serving the guests various delectable delicacies. In short the occasion radiates the aura and regalia befitting the occasion. Naturally, a question or two come to mind of the uninitiated; how could a private function like this be held at the President's House? Who bore the cost (Not me, the taxpayer, I hope)? Is this 'facility' also available to other citizens of the country? I just don't understand why do our rulers indulge in such irresponsible acts unbecoming their station and status? Is it to prove that they are above the law, rules and regulations? That, they can do whatever they wished, as if Pakistan was their personal fiefdom? -COL (Retd) RIAZ JAFRI, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, November 3.
