Fleecing the faithful

The sad story of high-level corruption during Haj by the officials of Religious Affairs Ministry that provided unfit accommodation for 50,000 Hajis at a distance of 3 to 8 Km away from the main mosque has resulted in the arrest of Director General of Haj. This speaks volumes about the bad management of the Federal Minister concerned, who was oblivious of the corrupt practices in his smug position. He should be taken to task about posting of a corrupt officer as DG of Haj Affairs. He ought to have resigned or fired by the Prime Minister, whose role in the entire saga of corruption is also not clear as he is reported to be instrumental in posting a corrupt officer as DG Haj. The authorities should hang their heads in shame about the abysmally low levels of corruption at the holy occasion of Haj. The buck finally rests with the PM who should himself face the music of this unheard of corruption during Haj, during his tenure at which even the presidency has looked askance at the horrid incidence of corruption. DR. MUHAMMAD YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore, November 16.
