ISLAMABAD - The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs is meeting today (Monday) to discus the much debated and controversial Reformed General Sales Tax (RGST) and flood surcharge where the government is likely to face tough time from the opposition as well as its coalition parties. Chairman, Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, Senator Ahmed Ali would chair the meeting which is likely to continue for three to four days to discuss the proposed bill of RGST and flood surcharge. According to the sources, after the passage of 18th Amendment, the Upper House of the Parliament would have to present its suggestions and proposals to the Lower House in two weeks time. The RGST was tabled in the National Assembly as well the Senate on November 12, which was referred to the standing committees of both the houses. However, according to the law, the Senate would forward its proposal to the Lower House in fourteen days time. Therefore, the Senate would have to forward its report on RGST to the National Assembly on November 26. Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs would finalise its report on RGST in three to four days meeting. Meanwhile President, Asif Ali Zardari has convened 66th Senate session on 23rd November in which reports on flood surcharge tax and Reformed General Sales Tax would be presented before the Senate session. According to the analysts, government would face tough time in finalizing the report on RGST as not only opposition parties in the parliament but the governments coalition parties had also opposed the proposed bill of RGST and flood surcharge. Only Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the Parliament is favouring the RGST and flood surcharge.
