Bjoergen wins opening World Cup event

SJUSJOEN, Norway (Agencies) - Norways Marit Bjoergen dominated the first event of the womens cross country World Cup season on Saturday, winning a 10-kilometer freestyle race by 27.1 seconds. The triple Olympic champion from Vancouver finished in 24 minutes, 22.3 seconds to beat Charlotte Kalla of Sweden, who clocked 24:49.4. Kalla was just 1.8 seconds ahead of Vibeke Skofterud of Norway, who finished third. The World Cup opener was initially scheduled to be held in Beitostoelen in Norway, but was moved to Sjusjoen due to a lack of snow in the unusually mild winter weather. A mens 15K freestyle event was scheduled for later Saturday.
