LAHORE The new 56 CNG-operated Chinese buses, 55 are due to arrive by the month end, could not prove helpful to decrease the public rush at the bus stops of the three allocated routes even on 5th day of starting their operation. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on November 16 had inaugurated the Foton Companys buses for three routes of the city and then it was claimed that buses would bring a pleasant change in the Lahore urban transport sector. Ultimately, the people have to face severe shortage of buses even on the three routes, B 9, B20 and B33, where the new buses had been inducted. Foton is running buses on route B-9, which starts at the City Railway Station and ends at Kahna via Lakshmi Chowk, Hall Road, Ganga Ram Hospital, Mozang, Ichhra, the Canal Road, Kalma Chowk, Model Town and Chungi Amar Sadhu; on B-20-B, which starts at Green Town and goes to Bagrian Chowk, Akbar Chowk, New Campus, Yateem Khana Chowk, Chauburji, Data Darbar, Azadi Chowk and end at Niazi Chowk; and route B-33-B, which starts at Hamdard Chowk and goes to Barkat Chowk, Akbar Chowk, Jinnah Hospital, Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Wahdat Road, Muslim Town, Shadman, Lawrence Road, Egerton Road and the City Railway Station. During a visit to the various bus stops of the said routes, dozens of people were witnessed waiting for the public transport at the routes. It was learnt that many of the 56 buses could not start their operation due to management problems like the unavailability of bus staffs, drivers and conductors, shifting of buses depot from Manga to Kahna and the students free travelling issue while the rest were available after the interval of two to three hours. The already plying buses at the routes were also witnessed packed with the passengers. Yes, many of 56 buses could not start their operation since their arrival due to management problems but they will be on roads within couple of days, said an official of the Lahore Transport Company when asked about the rare appearances of the vehicles at routes. The official was of the view that the Foton was a new company and certainly it needed some time to understand the environment. However, he told this scribe that 20 more buses would reach the city within 10 days for route No 1 while according to him more than 200 buses would start their operation within three months.
