QUETTA - A court has issued notice to PPP Balochistan President and Provincial Minister Mir (without portfolio) Sadiq Umrani after a suit for damages was filed by Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani. This is one of the interesting suits in the recent history of Balochistan as not only a huge amount of Rs1 billion have been claimed but this has been filed by the sitting chief minister against his partys provincial president and member of his cabinet. This legal fight started after Mir Sadiq Umranis accusation that the Raisani had provided Rs 810 million to his brother Senator Nawabzada Lashkari Raisani from secret fund. Raisani had termed the charge as baseless and issued a legal notice to Umrani for apology or pay Rs1 billion for defaming him. Umrani did not respond to the legal notice, therefore, Raisani had filed a suit for damages against him in district and sessions courts in Quetta. When the suit came for hearing before additional district and session judge Quetta-IV comprising Nauroz Oth neither Sadiq Umrani personally appeared nor he was represented by a counsel. Thus, the judge ordered for reissuance of notice to Umrani for Nov 26. This legal fight reflects that there are deep difference within Peoples Party Balochistan and the provincial government. Earlier, Umrani was enjoying not only the most lucrative portfolio of Communication and Works Department but he was also the parliamentary leader of PPP in Balochistan Assembly but due to the differences the Chief Minister deprived him from both portfolio and office of parliamentary leader. After withdrawal of portfolio of Communication and Works from Umrani, the department was bifurcated into two, including Roads and Building departments. These departments were allotted to two other ministers of PPP Ali Madad Jattak and Agha Irfan Karim respectively. Previously, both Ali Madad Jattak and Agha Irfan Karim were strong proponent of Mir Sadiq Umrani but after getting lucrative portfolios they gave up supporting him and joined hands with Raisani. Mir Sadiq Umrani, meanwhile, had taken the matter of depriving him of portfolio to party Co-Chairman President Asif Ali Zardari but so far this matter has not been resolved.
