KARACHI - Treading with extreme caution after his being part of the entourage of Zulfiqar Mirza had stirred up a storm within the rank and file of the ruling PPP and its ally MQM, Sharjeel Inam Memon refuted on Saturday that there was any pressure on him from the party. I myself offered to step down if my visit to London caused embarrassment to the party, asserted the PPP leader while interacting with mediapersons upon his arrival at the Karachi airport from Islamabad. The presidential spokesman had, on Friday evening, announced that Memon has resigned from the information ministry. (And) his resignation has been sent to Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah for approval. The Presidency had summoned Memon for accompanying the PPP dissident that annoyed the coalition partner MQM. Memons statement was something the PPP, MQM and Zulfiqar Mirza could live with. He said the ministry belonged to the PPP and being its loyal worker, he resigned voluntarily. He, however, asserted that the PPP was his identity and he would always maintain this identification. He added, Dr Zulfiqar Mirza is my friend and will always be, but I am bound to adhere to the partys discipline. To a media query, Memon gave a crafty reply, saying the MQM was a coalition partner and removing its concerns was well-justified. But, he said, he would not apologise to the MQM because he was not its member. In the evening on Saturday, a spokesman of the Sindh Chief Ministers Secretariat confirmed that the resignation of Memon was received. He said that the decision whether to accept it was expected soon. Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah was in his hometown, Khairpur, on Saturday. Nevertheless, aspirants to the newly-vacated ministerial portfolio have started lobbying for the top slot. According to sources, there is a likelihood that Sindh Law Minister Muhammad Ayaz Soomro would get additional charge of the provincial information ministry.
