MIRPUR (AJK) - Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Saturday asked the Taliban to lay down their arms besides refraining from playing in the hands of the enemy. He urged the Taliban to give children pen and book instead of suicide jackets. Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the newly-established passport office in Islamgarh town of Mirpur district, he said that Pakistan has brought terrorism under control. 'We want to see the youth of Pakistan carrying book and pen instead of suicide jackets, he added. He said that due to the reconciliation policy of President Asif Ali Zardari, the country has proceeded towards the path of speedy progress, stability and prosperity. He said that the rate of suicide attacks had reduced to a greater extent and the situation of law and order has improved. Rehman Malik recalled that the country had reached on the verge of destruction and bankruptcy when PPP came into power. He said that soon after taking power, the PPP wanted to improve law and order situation. He said that following the efforts of the national law-enforcing agencies especially Pakistan Army and the police, terrorism has vanished from the country. He said that he wants complete end to terrorism not only from Pakistan but also from the rest of the world. Rehman stressed for reconciliation policy while with dealing with the issues in the greater national interest. He said that the nation and the country could become prosperous when complete unity and harmony was established among the people. He said that under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari, the PPP-led govt was fighting war for the defence of Pakistan. He said that those talking of staging long-march or short march will be able to evaluate their position in the coming March. He asked the Opposition to keep the politics only to political values instead of bringing it to abuse. 'Otherwise those try to abuse will be given a matching response, he said. Govt was determined to get the country rid of the energy crisis, he added. PPP believed in complete unity and harmony for the sake of speedy progress and stability, he said. Expressing complete solidarity with the people of Jammu & Kashmir on behalf of the people and the govt of Pakistan, he said that Pakistan would continue moral political and diplomatic support to Kashmiris struggle for the achievement of their legitimate right to self-determination. PPP has deep-rooted and unequivocal commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he stated. He pointed out that it could be assessed through the fact that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani elaborated Pakistans just and principled stance on Kashmir before his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh and the media during his recent visit to Maldives at the sidelines of the SAARC Summit. Earlier, he inaugurated the passport office at Islamgarh, the electoral constituency of AJK Prime Minister Ch. Abdul Majeed. The office will benefit thousands of UK-based Kashmiri expatriates hailing from Islamhgarh and rest of the adjoining areas. AJK Prime Minister Ch. Abdul Majeed and others also addressed the ceremony.
