Rawalpindi - Finally, the Customs, Anti Smuggling and Taxation Court yesterday framed charges against famous model Ayyan Ali in currency smuggling case.

Ayyan Ali was arrested by Pakistan Customs from the Rawal Lounge of Benazir Bhutto Islamabad International Airport in March 2015 when she was trying to smuggle $5,06,800 to the United States via Dubai.

A case was registered against the model while she faced courts for almost eight months. The arrest of top model in money smuggling case caught media attention due to Ayyan’s celebrity status and alleged political connection.

Accused Ayyan Ali pleaded “non-guilty” to the charges and demanded trial. The court summoned the prosecution witnesses to record their statements in the case on next hearing and set the date for December 8, 2015.

When Customs, Anti Smuggling and Taxation Court Special Judge Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan assumed proceeding in currency smuggling case, Ayyal Ali appeared before him along with her counsel Sardar Latif Khan Khosa.

Arguing before the court, the model’s lawyer said that Pakistan Customs investigators found no proof of currency smuggling during interrogation.

He added that her client had yet not obtained the boarding pass and was going to leave the airport after handing over the money bag to her brother at Rawal Lounge. He said that he also filed acquittal plea before the Lahore High Court (LHC) in the currency smuggling case.

After conclusion of the arguments, the court indicted the accused model in currency smuggling case.

In the meanwhile, the court reserved its verdict till today (Friday) in application filed by Ayyan Ali for getting back her passport from the custody of investigators of Pakistan Customs. During proceeding, the Customs Prosecutor Ameen Ferooz apprised the court that the accused model could be fled from the country after getting passport and asked the court to reject her plea.

In another hearing of an application filed by Ayyan Ali accusing Pakistan Customs investigators of tempering with the case record, the court issued notices to Pakistan Customs officials and summoned them on December 8, 2015.

The model faced the court almost for 27 times and finally she was indicted by the judge of a Customs, Anti Smuggling and Taxation Court. Fans of Ayyan Ali used to throng court premises on her every hearing in a bid to see her glimpse.

The hearing in plea of Customs Intelligence Prosecutor for reference of money laundering has also been postponed by the court till next date of hearing.
