Islamabad - Pakistan would get the distinction of being the first parliament in the region to be powered by ‘solar energy’ after the completion of the solar power project.

The Chinese government is funding the project, as a gesture of friendship and an acknowledgement of the long standing Pak-China friendship, said a press release issued by the National Assembly Secretariat.

After commissioning, the project would generate 1MW electricity that would not only substantially reduce the expenditure on utility bills of the parliament building but also contribute excess power generated to the requirement of the parliament building to the national grid.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif along with Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani jointly inaugurated the project during his recent visit to Pakistan.

The work on the project is being carried out at fast pace and is likely to be completed in first week of December 2015.

The project management team of the National Assembly Secretariat is in close liaison with its Chinese counterpart executing the work and the deficiencies are regularly pointed out which are redressed by the Chinese team.
