LAHORE - Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said Punjab government has adopted merit policy at every level in the province.

This policy has yielded positive results in admission to medical colleges, the CM was quoted in a handout yesterday.

He said that merit policy will have to be implemented in private medical colleges on the pattern of public medical colleges and stern action under the law will be taken for violation of merit policy.

He was presiding over a high-level meeting which reviewed promotion of medical education and implementation of merit policy for admission to medical colleges as well as other issues.

He said merit policy is the only way to uphold the right of the deserving students. He said violation of merit policy for money is injustice to talented students which will not be permitted. He said that the merit policy evolved for public medical colleges is also applicable on private medical colleges and it is the responsibility of Health Department to ensure implementation of merit policy in all medical and dental colleges.

Shehbaz Sharif said that promotion of medical education is need of the hour and Punjab government has taken effective steps for this purpose. He said that the government is making sincere efforts for the improvement of public health facilities and promotion of medical education.

Member PMDC Dr Ess Muhammad said that Punjab government has taken a revolutionary step by adopting merit policy for admission in public and private medical colleges.

He said that Punjab government has taken a lead in this regard. Minister of State for National Health Services Saira Afzal Tarar, Adviser Health Khawaja Salman Rafique, Additional Chief Secretary, Secretaries Health and Law, Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University and concerned authorities attended the meeting while Member PMDC Dr. Ess Muhammad and Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences Lahore participated in the meeting through video link from Punjab House Islamabad.  The CM also chaired the meeting of LDA Governing Body that approved setting up of the sub-offices of the authority at Sheikhpura, Nankana Sahib, and Kasur.

The 5th meeting of body besides laying framework to provide better services and facilities to the citizens through the sub-offices also decided to take indiscriminate action against those who have established illegal housing societies.

It was also decided to conduct a survey regarding illegal constructions and non-construction of buildings on plots within stipulated period.

The meeting decided to develop land on both sides of Sherpao Bridge for commercial purposes and select best consultants for this purpose as well as develop business and financial model. It was also decided on the occasion to take action against those who got double payments of plots from LDA and National Highway Authority in 80s as well as proceed against officers and staff at that time who made these payments.
