LAHORE - Over one dozen buffaloes were crushed to death under a Karachi-bound train near Raiwind on Sunday, police and rescue workers said.

The buffaloes were crossing the railway track when a speedy train hit them near Kalay Da Kot. As a result, at least 12 buffaloes died on the spot. An official said the train driver repeatedly pushed the horn but to no avail. The driver also failed to stop the train.

Later, railway police officials rushed to the spot and managed to clear the track. Authorities were investigating the incident.

UC chairman held

in firing case

Batapur police on Sunday arrested chairman of a union council and his five accomplices over aerial firing in front of an under-construction house. Police sources said the gunfire triggered panic in the residential locality.  Police identified the main suspect as Rashid Ali, said to be UC chairman and local leader of the ruling PML-N. The police also seized automatic guns from their possession. The suspects were sent to the lockup after the police registered a criminal case against them.  A police official said that gunmen tried to stop work at a construction site, stating that it was a disputed property.
