PESHAWAR - United States Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher has said that his government seeks to further enhance friendship between Pakistan and the United States with special focus on economic cooperation and peace in the region. He was talking to NWFP Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani and Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti whom he called on separately here on Sunday. The Governor in his meeting with Richard Boucher emphasised that success in this struggle was assured due to people' mobilising lashkars in support of the actions of the government against terrorists. Richard Boucher while talking to the Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti, expressed the resolve of his government to boost up economic cooperation as well as friendship based on mutual benefits. He assured that the American government would increase cooperation with all countries of the region particularly Pakistan regarding peace and economic development of the area. He told the NWFP Chief Minister that soon the law regarding developmental project under the name of ROZs would be sanctioned by the American Congress and implemented jointly. The Governor informed US Assistant Secretary of State that the battle against such terrorists could never be won without public support, soundly behind the government in the form of Lashkars to combat militancy. Responding to a query, the Governor stated that the recent statements by coalition partners on the need for political dialogue for a solution in Afghanistan is a welcome move and Pakistan fully support such initiatives and will provide all support to ensure its success. In this regard the Pak-Afghan Jirgas initiative also came under discussion. It was agreed that socio-economic development of the region including FATA was a priority and expectations of the people needed to be met in this respect. In this connection, the Governor stated that promotion of education and development of agriculture sector are the top most priorities of the government to bring a positive change in the life of the people of the area. In Education sector, he said, we have planned to establish a full-fledged university for FATA and a chain of cadet colleges. In Agriculture sector, he said, plans were already under way to construct small dams to provide irrigational facilities as well as river embankments to reclaim eroded farmlands. Road network was another sector being accorded priority to enable livelihood generation in the trade sector, he said. The plan of raising a 15,000 strong levy force in FATA to provide useful employment to the tribal youth was also discussed on this occasion. Meanwhile, NWFP Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti told the United States Assistant Secretary of States Richard Boucher about the political stability in the province as well as law and order situation and the policies of the provincial government regarding economic development of the area. Hoti expressed his resolve that the provincial government would fulfill its responsibilities to maintain peace and order in the province. He made it clear on the occasion that the provincial government want a peaceful outcome of the political issues through peaceful dialogue but would not compromise on government writ as well as making sure the safety of its citizens. Taking of combating extremism and terrorism, the Chief Minister said it was very essential to promote education, provision of employment of opportunities and socio-economic uplift of people to get rid of these scourge. The Chief Minister NWFP was of the view that spreading of education, jobs provision, social and economic development was a must for ending the trend of militancy and reiterated that Pakistan want cordial relations with all countries of the world community and have a desire that the relationship between Pakistan and America move forward in the joint interest of both countries on the basis of freedom and respect for the sovereignty.
