LAHORE - The Lahore High Court Tuesday called for a report for November 10, from the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Managing Director, Ministry of Defence and Federal Secretary Transport on a petition seeking travel facilities to handicapped persons on 50 per cent discount in fares as announced by President Asif Ali Zardari in 2009. The petition has been filed by one Afzal Humayun who pleads for the rights of those who have any physical or mental disability. The petitioner told the court that on December 30, 2009, the President speaking on the occasion of International Day for Disabled Persons had made an announcement that there would be 50 per cent cut in travel fares for the handicapped in PIA, Railways and the rest of the public transport, but the promise had not been materialised so far. He highlighted the responsibilities of the State towards such people regarding lessening their sufferings and hardships especially while travelling. The announcement by President Zardari for discount in fares had kindled a ray of hope among the handicapped persons across the country, but now they had been disappointed, as it remained just a hollow slogan for them, the petitioner said. He said that the Pakistan Railways had already started giving some discount to the handicapped but elsewhere no soft corner was being shown for them and they were left at the mercy of circumstances.
