IJT, teachers join hands against VC

LAHORE Academic staff, employees associated with Jamaat-e-Islami or having previous links with Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba and cronies of sacked Prof Dr Iftikhar Baloch are spearheading campaign aimed at maligning Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran to deprive him extension in tenure, TheNation has learnt. Aggrieved by steps of Dr Mujahid Kamran that limited political activities of IJT at the PU Campus, a handful of teachers and employees had launched campaign against VC to give an impression that he was not having any support among faculty members. These teachers and employees had even gone to the extent of joining hands with formers foes, cronies of Dr Iftikhar Hussain Baloch who was sacked from the slot of Principal College of Earth and Environmental Sciences on the charges of moral turpitude and sexual harassment of female students and college employees. Refusal of request for IJT rally at PU Campus intensified campaign against Dr Mujahid Kamran to avoid such situation in future. The IJT has to approach Punjab Government to get a nod for holding Ijtema. In an implicit reference to the act of PU VC, JI Secretary General Liaquat Baloch, while addressing IJT ijtema, said that some persons had wasted time in attempts to stop gathering of huge number of students. According to the insiders, office bearers of Academic Staff Association, mainly those linked with JI sister organization Tanzeem Asatza, were not happy with the VC due to steps taken against IJT and wanted to deny him an extension in tenure. Preempting extension in tenure of Dr Mujahid Kamran due to his good showing as VC and strong support among PU academic staff, the insiders claim, opponents are out to convince Punjab Government that he (existing VC) is no more suitable for the slot. Dr Zaid Mahmood, teacher at Chemistry Department and also Secretary ASA, is also active in the campaign due to his sole grievance against the VC, the sacking of his senior colleague Dr Iftikhar Baloch.
