Pakistan has finally been split into two distinct visions. The first one has been personified by Malala Yousafzai — it is a vision of Pakistan where modern education for all children, including girls, is a cornerstone of the future. The second vision is that of Imran Khan — it is a vision that sees Pakistan as a sharia compliant Islamic state in the same vein as how the Taliban see it. People believing in either vision are slowly congregating behind their respective symbols with civil society being divided down the middle as a consequence. It is sad that Malala and her vision are being labeled as being on a ventilator while Imran Khan’s vision is being drummed up as the future for Pakistan. We are definitely living in interesting times and only the future will tell which vision triumphs ultimately.
