QUETTA - Women hailing from Baloch National Movement (BNM) on Saturday demonstrated against the security forces, accusing them of having bombed human settlements in the earthquake-affected areas of Mashkay in Awaran district.

About a dozen women gathered outside the Quetta Press Club, holding placards inscribed with slogans “Stop military operation in Mashkay” and “Stop bombing human settlements”. They also shouted slogans demanding international humanitarian organisations to intervene in the matter.

Maheen Baloch, a BNM leader, said security forces bombed three towns in Mashkay as a result of which dozens of people, including women and children, were martyred. “The security forces have taken away everything from the houses,” she alleged. She said the federal government was not allowing international aid organisations to operate in Awaran to conceal the brutalities committed by the security forces. “The security forces have forced a large population to migrate from Mashkay instead of providing relief to them,” she claimed.

Mashkay in Awaran is said to be a hub of militancy while Awaran is the native district of Dr Allah Nazar Baloch, a guerilla leader, who is allegedly leading the banned Baloch Liberation Front.

Awaran and some parts of Kech district were badly affected by the Sept 24 earthquake that killed more than 500 people and wounded thousands, besides leaving over 35,000 families homeless.

Incidents of attacks on the security forces have been occurring in the district since the beginning of relief activities in Awaran district.
