KARACHI - A cop was gunned down and another critically wounded in Sharafi Goth area while 16 suspects were apprehended from Lyari during targeted operation continued in the city.

A constable Bagh Ali, 45, and head constable Munawar Ali were on routine patrolling when they tried to stop a suspicious motorbike near graveyard but some gunmen riding the bike sprayed bullets and managed to flee.

SHO Ikhlaq Ahmed said the culprits opened fire when cops asked them to stop for routine checking. Both the cops were shot multiple times. Bagh Ali died on the spot while the injured were admitted with critical wounds. Both of them were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medicolegal formalities and treatment, however, the doctors termed the injured cop’s condition critical.

SHO Ahmed further said the victim policeman was posted to the Sharafi Goth police station for the last one year and was the resident of Quaidabad area. The police were looking for the criminals involved. No case has been registered while further investigation was underway.

On the other side, heavy gunshot had been witnessed in different parts of Lyari as rangers reached Phool Patti Lane and Ranghiwara areas of Lyari. Residents said at least two hours nonstop firing panicked the whole Lyari area but gangsters managed to escape under the cover of firing. Rangers and police made door-to-door operation as gangsters left the ground. Security forces picked up scores of suspects from the area.

Meanwhile, as many as 13 suspects were arrested during targeted raids in various parts of the metropolis, including Bilal Colony, Mehran Town, Landhi, Orangi Town, North Karachi, Akbar Market, Clifton, Paposh Nagar, North Nazimabad, Swat Colony, Rangiwara, Chanesor Goth, Gulshan-e-Maymar and Saeedabad areas.

According to rangers’ spokesperson, 13 criminals were arrested during the targeted raids and weapons were also recovered from their possession. The suspects were shifted to undisclosed location for further interrogation.

PCG seizes 25-kg heroin:

Pakistan Coast Guard claimed to have recovered a huge quantity of heroin during a raid in Gulshan-e-Maymar area on Saturday.

According to PCG spokesman Safeer Mehdi, the raid was conducted on a tip-off at a compound situated in Gulshan-e-Maymar area.

During the compound search, the PCG officials recovered a huge cache of heroin from the empty water tank of the compound. No arrest was made as nobody was present at the time of raid. Sources said initial investigation suggested that the high profile gang of drug peddlers was behind storing the heroin which is likely to be smuggled to foreign countries.

He said the recovered heroin weighed around 25 kilogrammes and is worth millions of dollars in international market. The heroin had been seized while further investigation was underway.
