LAHORE - The government is considering appointing former Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah as province’s new governor, while Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar will be given an important task at the Centre.
This was decided during a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday. An announcement in this regard will be made soon.
Sources in the prime minister house took Rana Sana into confidence about his new role in the government. However, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif wants some delay in the new appointment.
Shahbaz Sharif had removed Rana Sanaullah and his own secretary Dr Tauqir Shah after the Model Town incident. At least 14 activists of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek had been killed and more than 100 injured during clashes with police who had raided the Minhaj offices to remove security barriers.
Furthermore, a legal point is also being discussed in the government circles that the new role of Rana Sana can be challenged in the court against the backdrop of Model Town tragedy.
On the other hand, quoting Asif Ali Zardari’s immunity as president of the country, the power corridors are considering applying the same strategy in Rana Sana’s case.
An accountability court had granted permanent immunity to former president Asif Ali Zardari from appearing in the court in proceedings of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) reference against him.
