BISE Lahore, through an order, has banned the enrollment of students studying science from unrecognised private schools. By doing so, BISE has made learning impossible for students that cannot afford to get admission in the recognised private schools due to their poverty. An even more harrowing aspect of this step is that these students, after passing their matriculation examinations without science subjects, would not be able to get admission even in a vocational institute. The vocational institutes also require a background in science before they train you in any craft. These poor students will, thus, not be able to learn anything, which could enable them to earn for themselves. May I point out that BISE's task is to open new vistas for students through introduction of new subjects and maintenance of academic standards, rather than to devise this sort of mindless rules that discourage educational activities. In fact, the Board is a body that is only supposed to evaluate students. Arbitrary, unfair rules like this negate the fundamental rights guaranteed in the constitution. -MUHAMMAD SAEED CHAUDHARY, Lahore, September 18.
