LAHORE - PML-N President Nawaz Sharif Wednesday said that his party would contest general elections not for acquisition of power but to rid the country of incompetent and corrupt rulers.

He vowed, if won elections and formed government, his party will put the county on the road towards peace, progress and prosperity. But he feared that the nation may have to face a difficult situation if the elections were not held on time.

The PML-N chief was addressing a meeting of central office-bearers of the party at the party secretariat here, on the occasion of presentation of electoral, political and organisational review reports from Sargodha, Multan and Gujranwala divisions.

Nawaz said his party was in the arena of politics, not just to defeat personalities and groups, but to ensure success of Pakistan itself. He claimed that only PML-N had the panacea for the ills produced by power hungry individuals, who completely ignored the national interest.

The PML-N chief said his party, owing to its continuous struggle, had been duly acknowledged for its steadfast principles, while everyone also admitted the efforts of Muslim League for ensuring independence of judiciary and rule of the people. He pledged that after getting the principle of predominance of people in political field duly established, his party’s next target was to build the national economy on strong foundations.

Online adds: Former Federal Minister and Member National Assembly of PML-Q, Riaz Hussain Pirzada has decided to contest the forthcoming general elections from the PML-N platform.

Sources said that Pirzada has resigned from the ministry and party membership, after a controversy over some issues with the party leaders. After his resignation, the PML-N started contacting him, and now after his reaching a deal with the PML-N, Pirzada is expected to meet Nawaz Sharif soon.

Talking to Online Pirzada confirmed that he was in contact with the PML-N and he wanted all the 'League components' to get united for contesting the general elections. To a question, he said that he had not called on Nawaz yet but soon he would meet with the PML-N chief.

Pirzada said that the political atmosphere of the country should remain good. Adding that he said he would not resign from the membership of the assembly until the assembly was dissolved. On the new provinces issue, he said that the movement of Bahawalpur province was sabotaged by the slogan of Seraiki province. People from among the dwellers of Seraiki built have been on the posts of premier, chief minister and governor, and they want to make Bahawalpur province.
