LAHORE - Ghazanfar Mehmood of Rawalpindi Golf Club Saturday dominated the second round of the three-round 34th Coca Cola Punjab Amateur Golf Championship in progress here at the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club Golf Course. Ghazanfar’s aggregate score for the two rounds was gross 148, four over par, compiled through a round of 72 on the first day and 76 on the second day. Going by the aggregate score, one does not see the touch of brilliance as Ghazanfar was a little out of sorts on at least four holes during the second round. He double-bogeyed the 6th hole and as the round progressed he lost a stroke on the 9th hole and two more strokes on the 10th and 11th holes.

Wazir Ali was Ghazanfar’s nearest challenger. In the span of the second round, Wazir showed ample resilience and brilliance in the first 14 holes and seemed to be on way to a winner’s status but then the champion’s energy suddenly went into a load shedding mode and he started to lose strokes with gay abandon. Wazir bogeyed the 15th hole and followed this up with a poorer showing on the 16th hole which he double bogeyed. As if this disaster was not enough Wazir continued to lose strokes and two strokes were lost on the 17th and the closing 18th hole. As against this poor display of golfing skills, in the first 14 holes, he had managed three birdies on holes 7, 11 and 13 and eight regulation pars which reflect on his actual golfing ability.

Interestingly the best round of the day was produced by Fakhar Imam of Defence Raya Golf Club with the second round score of 74 as against a score of 82 in the first round. By virtue of the extremely good showing in the second round, Fakahr moved up 20 places on the leader board and now placed at the eighth position. Another power packed round on Sunday can land him amongst the winners.

Other main contenders were Zohaib Asif (DHA) at a two rounds aggregate score of 152, followed by M Naeem (Abbotabad) at 153, M Rehman (Royal Palm) at 154, and Taimoor Khan (Peshawar) at 155. Another competitor at a score of 155 was Usman Ali of Garrison and Fakahr Imam (Defence Raya) at 158.

The senior amateurs will compete over 18 holes today (Sunday). After the conclusion of the championship, a prize distribution will be held at 4:30pm at the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club lawns. Governor Punjab M Rafiq Rajwana will be chief guest at the concluding ceremony.
