Islamabad - On the intervention of Federal Ombudsman Salman Faruqi, two teenage girls, abducted from Karachi by child traffickers a year ago, were recently recovered from Dera Murad Jamali Balochistan.

The recovery was made possible due to personal efforts of Child Commissioner Sindh Zia Ahmed Awan, who is a prominent lawyer and head of Madadgar, Karachi-based NGO, and recently appointed Children Commissioners Raheela Hameed Durrani, Speaker Balcohistan Assembly and Shama Parveen Magsi, former provincial minister and Syeda Hashmi, Commissioner for Children.

The young girls, residents of Machar Colony Karachi, went missing shortly after they had left their homes to buy sweets. The aggrieved parents searched for their daughters across the city but did not succeed in tracing them.

After sometime with the help of NGO Madadgar, the parents were able to reach Edhi Centre at Sohrab Goth where the girls were informed to be residing. However, the parents were told by the Edhi Centre personnel that the girls had left the Centre with a person impersonating as their father. Only evidence provided by the centre to the parents was photographs taken as documentation of reunification at the time of handing over the girls to the fake parents.

Based on the formal letter issued by Madadgar to SHO Samanabad, FIR was registered against the primary suspect. Thereafter, the police launched hectic search and succeeded in apprehending a relative of the primary suspect. The apprehended accused disclosed that trafficker namely Shafi Muhammad had taken the girls to Dera Murad Jamali, Balochistan.

The Commissioner for Children Sindh and head of Madadgar, Zia Ahmed Awan, apprised the Federal Ombudsman of the facts of the case. Following Ombudsman’s advice Ejaz Ahmed Qureshi, National Commissioner for Children briefed the Children Commissioners of Balochistan about the incident and requested them to take necessary actions for the recovery of the abducted girls.

The Children Commissioners promptly went into action seeking help of I.G. Police and other influential personalities of the province for the recovery of the girls. Due to their effective coordination and efforts, MPA Nadir Magsi caught hold of the culprits at Dera Murad Jamali with the kidnapped girls. Presently the girls were in safe custody and Sindh police have taken necessary steps to reunite them with their parents after a year.

The Federal Ombudsman had recently appointed 13 Committees of Children Commissioners across the country for protection of child rights. The initiative has started yielding results.
