Rawalpindi - The electricity supply remained suspended for long hours at various localities of the city creating water shortage and other problems for the residents.

Dhamial, Hayyal, Bank Colony, Mohra Baryan, Bunda Nagyal, Chakri Road, Quaid e Azim Colony, Sadiqabad, Khurram Colony, Service Road, Janjua Street, Kuri Road and its adjoining areas yesterday faced 13 to 24 hour load-shedding due to some fault in the transformers and negligence of the WAPDA officials.

The residents of Sadiqabad and Dhamial demanded the government to suspend XENs and SDOs of their divisions or else they would surround the WAPDA offices located at Chandni Chowk, Iqbal Town and in Liaquat Colony on Chakri Road.

According to details, WAPDA suspended electricity supply in various areas of Dhamial Sub Division at 9am causing immense troubles for the residents. Reportedly, a large numbers of electronic appliances were also burnt due to power tripping.

Haji Ramzan, a local, told The Nation that WAPDA observed unannounced load-shedding for the whole day. He said the area people suffered great agony and hardships, as the weather was extremely hot and humid. Manazoor Khan, hails from Mohra Baryan, said the long power cut triggered water shortage in the area. He said the locals lodged several complaints with WAPDA Complaint Cell but in vein.

On the other hand, residents of Sadiqabad and its suburbs told The Nation that WAPDA had unannounced load-shedding in the areas. They said WAPDA suspended electricity supply at 1pm on Sunday that was restored at 4am on Monday while the citizens once again faced power cut at 5am. They said people also experienced load-shedding at 10am and electricity was restored in the evening. They said they had tried to contact on the cell numbers of SDO and XEN to lodge complaint but their cells were switched off.

“It had become a routine in the area that load-shedding was prolonged for 12 hours. We will not accept this. We will stage a protest demonstration outside WAPDA offices if the government did not change the SDO and XEN,” said Khuram, Javed, Yasir and Fazal Hussain of Sadiqabad.

They said Sadiqabad Sub Division has become a problem house because of corruption and negligence of SDO, Line Superintendents and meter readers.

SDO Dhamial Sub Division Muhammad Shafi, when contacted, told that WAPDA has suspended power supply because of some repairing work.

“We had announced through media that the electricity in Dhamial will remain shut from 9am to 2pm,” he said.

However, when SDO was told that many areas of Dhamial plunged in darkness due to load-shedding, he replied, “Let me check what fault developed in the area transformers.”

XEN and SDO of Sadiqabad Sub Division were not available for their comments.
