Power consumer, accused attempt self-immolation

MIRPUR (AJK)/TOBA TEK SINGH – A power consumer on Wednesday attempted to commit suicide in front of the local office of the AJK Electricity Department by setting himself on fire. He got perplexed of the hostile behaviour of the officials concerned towards his repeated complaints about excessive billing of his domestic power supply connection.

The power consumer, identified as Ansar Najeeb, a resident of local Thothal locality, was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Divisional Headquarters Hospital in critical condition with severe burn injuries he suffered during his suicide attempt.

The power consumer who is a worker in a local service station and father of three kids was allegedly being constantly served with the inflated bills for his domestic electricity connection for the last four months by the AJK Electricity Department. He had repeatedly lodged complaints with the local subdivisional officer about the wrong billing with request for issuance of correct bill against the electricity he had actually consumed during the concerned months and for the restoration of the power supply connection. The department had disconnected for nonpayment of the bill. But all of his requests went in vein despite roaming pillar to post in the offices of the Electricity Department.

On Wednesday, Ansar again came to the office of the SDO office for the rectification of the bill but he faced the same negative response from the officials concerned.

The perplexed and upset consumer set himself on fire by sprinkling petrol in front of the SDO’s office. People rushed to rescue him and extinguished the fire flames. Later, he was shifted to the Mirpur DHQ Hospital with severe burn injuries where his condition was stated to be critical.

Likewise in Toba Tek Singh, a fraud case accused attempted to immolate himself at Gojra on Tuesday as a protest against the city police for registering an FIR against him. Waseem Abbas of Dastagir Colony reached outside the police station, set himself on fire and entered the station where the policemen extinguished the fire but in the meantime most of his body had burnt.

He was admitted to Gojra THQ Hospital where doctors referred him to Faisalabad Allied Hospital. Dastagir Colony’s woman Safia had got registered an FIR on Monday against him and his two accomplices Murtaza and Ghulam Rasool Under Sections 420, 468 and 471 of PPC. She claimed that she had adopted Waseem Abbas as her son. She said after selling her old house she gave Waseem Abbas Rs3.7 million for purchasing a new house. He purchased a house for her with Rs 1.1 million and the rest of the money he used for purchasing another house for himself, she alleged. She added that later he made her sign an agreement with fraud under which she sold her half house to his accomplice Murtaza. She also said in the FIR that accused Waseem was also blackmailing and forcing her married daughter Surayya to get divorce from her husband Mushtaq and marry with him (Waseem). When she refused, Waseem filed a suit in a court against Suaryya’s husband Mushtaq to deprive him of his owned house with fake claim of ownership of his house, she said.

After the registering an FIR, the police were raiding to arrest Waseem and his accomplices. The police later arrested Murtaza but Waseem could not be arrested who appeared in front of police and set himself ablaze as a protest.

DPO Usman Akram visited Gojra city police station after the attempt of Waseem Abbas to immolate himself. He told reporters that he had ordered an inquiry into the incident. He added that it was not understandable why Waseem Abbas attempted self-immolation.
