KMC staff children to get 50pc concession in fees: Waseem

KARACHI – Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar said on Thursday that 50 percent concession in fees would be given to all the children of KMC employees at the time of admission in city’s medical and dental colleges. But he made it clear that merit would not be overlooked.

He further said that strict transparency would be ensured in the admission process and there would be no quota for anybody, including his own children.

He was chairing the general body meeting of the KMDC, which was also attended by MNA Nighat Shakeel, MPA Jamal Ahmed, DMC Central Chairman Rehan Hashmi, Finance Committee Chairman Nadeem Hidayat Hashmi, former principal Dr Waqar H Kazmi, Dr Farooq Mamji, Professor Abbas Hussain, Azfar Moeed, Nighat Shakeel, Director Medical Services Dr Muhammed Ali Abbasi and other officers. The mayor urged the governing body members to ensure admissions in the college only on merit and submit their suggestions for improvement in all faculties of the institution.

He said professors and doctors of highest calibre and excellent record should be inducted in the faculty so that education standards of the college could be further elevated. He said that highly educated doctors from Abbasi Shaheed Hospital would be preferred when it came to filling the vacant posts in the KMDC.

He also directed the governing body to make the academic council in accordance with the bylaws and that this council must only look into the academic matters, with its meetings to be held on monthly basis.

“The governing body should also give approval of the constitution of two more committees for ensuring better coordination among the members,” Waseem counselled.

It was informed at the meeting that the annual convocation of the college would be held in January 2018 for which all preparations were being given final touches.

The mayor said, “We have to maintain the high standards of this college and bring further improvement in it so that the students could serve the people in a better way after completing their medical education.”
