Sugarcane farmers for early start to crushing season

MIRPURKHAS – Scores of sugarcane growers of taluka Kot Ghulam Muhammad held a demonstration outside the Tharparkar Sugar Mills on Tuesday to protest against delay in the start of the crushing season and non-issuance of notification for fixing the rate of sugarcane at Rs182 per 40 kilogramme.

Led by Mumtaz Rahimoon, Ch Faisal, Younus Bhurgari, Pappo Malhi and others, the protestors were carrying banners and placards in their hands and were raising slogans against the Sindh government and sugar mills’ owners.

Speaking on the occasion, leaders of the protestors strongly criticised the Sindh government and demanded the government ensure immediate start to the sugarcane crushing and fix official rate of the crop.  They lamented that they were suffering huge losses due to delay in the start of harvesting of the crop because not only the crop was losing its weight but they could also not sow the wheat crop at the designated land as they had still to harvest the sugarcane crop. Terming the situation as the ‘economic massacre’ of sugarcane farmers, they vowed to resist the status quo and decided to protest in front of Bilawal House in Karachi.
