Dozens of ‘MQM-L workers’ held prior to Youm-e-Shuhada

KARACHI – The law enforcement agencies on Wednesday picked up dozens of workers allegedly associated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London (MQM-L) in a bid to prevent the holding of a political event, ‘Youm-e-Shuhada’ scheduled to be held at Yadgar-e-Shuhada, Jinnah Ground, Azizabad on December 9.

According to the reports, scores of political workers and sympathizers of MQM-L or those still indecisive about joining the emerging political factions of MQM, were picked up in various raids carried out in different areas of the city.

Sources said that the crackdown against the activists had started following the announcement of Youm-e-Shuhada by London- based leadership.

MQM-L, in a press statement, had announced to observe the day of their martyrs under the leadership of Professor Hassan Arif on Saturday.

Sources revealed that the security agencies had started picking up dozens of party activists and sympathizers of London-based leadership covertly.

They further revealed that the men picked up would be released on December 10, Sunday.

The raids were conducted in various localities of the city, including Federal B Area, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Nazimabad, Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Shah Faisal, Orangi Town and Liaquabad.

Five suspects held

Meanwhile, Rangers on Wednesday claimed to have arrested at least five suspects, including a political worker, during the ongoing targeted raids in various parts of the city. A political worker was arrested during a targeted raid conducted on a tip off at Madina Colony. He was identified as Kamran alias Kami.

According to Rangers’ spokesperson, Kami was affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London and had been involved in various criminal activities, including aerial firing during strikes, wall chalking, casting bogus votes during general elections in 2008 and 2013, spreading anti-state propaganda on social media and sale and purchase of arms. In another raid, Rangers said it had picked up Noor alias Noori, who belonged to Lyari gang, and was involved in target killings and extortion activities in Macchar Colony. Meanwhile, three more suspects were arrested during a raid conducted in Gulberg neighbourhood.

The suspects arrested were identified as Usman alias Shanu, Asif Rajput and Javed alias Ali. According to Rangers spokesperson, those arrested were involved in various cases of cheating people through fake prize money schemes and cybercrimes. The Force also claimed to have recovered arms and ammunitions from their possession.

The suspects, however, were later handed over to the police.

Police pick up dozen ‘outlaws’

On the other hand, police claimed to have arrested over a dozen outlaws, including former unit in-charge of MQM in various raids and operation carried out in different parts of the city.

Landhi police arrested Nazir, allegedly associated with MQM-L. Police said that Nazir used to work as an in-charge of Unit 82, and had also confessed to have killed two rival group workers.

Police said it had also recovered weapons from his possession while further investigation was underway.

Al-Falah police claimed to have arrested two suspects besides recovering weapons from their possession. Police said that Ibrahim Hussain and Sameer Ali were involved in various cases of street crimes. Similarly, Pakistan Bazaar police said it had arrested Arman aka Azad while recovered weapons from his possession. Malir City police claimed to have arrested two car lifters namely Hassan aka Nadeem and Munna Bah.

Preedy police said it had taken into custody Abdul Haseeb and Salman besides recovering weapons from their possession. Surjani Town police arrested Abdul Hamid and also recovered weapons and narcotics from his possession.

Police said that those held used to run a drug den in the locality.
