LHC stays appointment of FAU VC

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday stayed the appointment of Faisalabad Agriculture University vice chancellor and directed Punjab High Education Commission and other authorities to submit replies. Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah was hearing the petition moved by Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal Randhawa alleging illegalities were being committed in the appointment process.  He prayed the court to stay the appointment and direct the authorities to start afresh in light of the criteria set by the court.  A law officer opposed the plea saying that 59 candidates had been interviewed and summary had also been sent to the chief minister. At this stage, he said, it would not be appropriate to stay the process.  After hearing both sides, the Chief Justice stayed process for appointment of the varsity’s vice chancellors and adjourned further hearing until December 10.  Earlier, the petitioner’s counsel contended that the court directives on process of appointment for vice chancellors had not been implemented by the authorities.  The search committee made for appointment, as per the court’s directives, had also invited applications from overseas candidates, he said. The counsel said that the appointment process was started on the basis of last year’s ads and criteria different from other universities while the criteria laid down by the high court was meant for all universities.  The appointing authority, the petitioner’s counsel alleged, had adopted a person specific just to accommodate a former vice chancellor of the university. –Staff Reporter
