Senate panel briefed on two Pakistanis jailed abroad
ISLAMABAD – The Foreign Office on Friday briefed the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development on the present status of Zulfiqar Ali, whose death sentence had been postponed by the Indonesian authorities, and the case of Islam Nawaz, who is missing in Saudi Arabia.
The meeting was held under the chair of Senator Baz Muhammad Khan at the Parliament House and a representative of the Foreign Office told the meeting about the current status of Zulfiqar Ali. He said the clemency case was still pending and the decision has to be taken by the president of Indonesia.
He also said that Zulfiqar Ali was being treated in an Indonesian hospital and 30,000 dollars have been paid for the treatment. He said that the Foreign Office was covering everything on the humanitarian side but the legal side will be decided by the Indonesian authorities.
Talking about Islam Nawaz, who is missing in Saudi Arabia, he said that the Foreign Office was still trying to locate the person and will submit a report to the committee soon in this regard.
Meanwhile, the committee asked the relevant ministry and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Workers Welfare Board to expedite work on finalizing suitable places for construction of Working Folks Grammar Schools in Malakand Division and consult Senator Nisar Muhammad Khan in the process for a better idea on the feasibility and requirement of these schools in areas where industrial units were in place.
The committee asked the relevant ministry to take into consideration that these schools should only be established in areas where industries were functioning.
The committee was told that tenders had been invited for construction of school buildings in Shahbaz Azmat Khel, Bannu but the lowest bid was exceeding the budget limit of the Workers Welfare Board. It was stated that tenders have been advertised again and new tenders will be opened again on December 20.
The meeting was attended by senators Aurangzeb Khan, Ahmed Hassan, Saeedul Hassan Mandokhail, Lt-Gen (retd) Abdul Qayyum, Najma Hameed, Haji Saifullah Khan Bangash, Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Secretary of the Ministry Dr Hashim Popelzai and others.
