Court records statements of witnesses
ISLAMABAD – The Accountability Court Islamabad on Monday recorded statements of more prosecution witnesses in all three references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members and adjourned the hearing till December 19.
Both Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz had been granted exemption from a personal hearing in the case for December 11 and December 15 respectively. Capt (retd) Mohammad Safdar, who is a co-accused in Avenfield properties reference, appeared before the court.
In the Al Azizia Steel Mills reference, defence counsel Khawaja Haris completed cross-examination of prosecution witness Malik Tayyab. During the course of cross-questioning, the defence counsel asked the witness whether he personally knew all those who had drawn cheques given by Nawaz Sharif or he was depending on the available record with him. The witness replied that he was depending on the available record with him. Later, the hearing in the case was adjourned till December 19.
In the Flagship reference, the prosecution sought time for provision of a statement given by witness Afaq Ahmad to the JIT and the hearing in the case was also adjourned for the same day.
In the Avenfield properties reference, prosecution witness Adeel Akhtar had recorded his statement while the defence counsel would cross-examine him at the next date of hearing. The hearing in this reference was also adjourned for December 19.
As the exemption for personal appearance for Sharif and Maryam Nawaz would expire before December 19 and both were directed by the court to ensure their presence at the next date of hearing.
In the Avenfield properties reference, all family members including Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Capt (retd) Safdar and Hassan and Hussain Nawaz were on the list of the accused. As both Hassan and Hussain Nawaz had been declared proclaimed offenders for not joining the trial the rest of the three — Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar are facing the trial.
In the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment Company references, only Sharif was facing the trial and Hassan and Hussain Nawaz were declared proclaimed offenders in both these references.
