Workshop on optics, photonics begins at QAU

Islamabad – An optics and photonics workshop, bringing scientists from around the world to promote light sciences in the country, was inaugurated at Quaid-i-Azam University on Tuesday.

The purpose of the five-day international workshop, organised by the Department of Physics, QAU, is to bring together award-wining and other leading scientists working in the areas of optics and photonics from around the world.

The QAU Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Ashraf while addressing the inaugural session of the workshop said that the conference would be helpful to promote new ideas, discuss latest research trends and share the innovative work in the field of physics.

He appreciated the efforts of the organisers and welcomed the participants including international students from Iran, Turkey, Malaysia, Russia and China. Dr Imrana Ashraf, chief organiser of the workshop, said that the activity had been designed to promote light sciences and their applications within Pakistan. She said that the workshop structure would allow the students and young researchers to meet and interact with the plenary speakers and other international participants.

Dr Imrana further said that in addition to lectures, there would be practical training with laboratories covering a variety of topics, including the basis of optics, information processing, and Fourier optics and laser spectroscopy.

The topics including classical optics, quantum optics, atom optics, nonlinear optics, optical engineering, fibre optics, optoelectronic devices, laser spectroscopy, optical imaging would be discussed. The workshop will conclude on December 15.
