University girl dies on road
LAHORE – A Punjab University girl was killed in a road accident in Muslim Town police precincts on Wednesday, rescuers said. The accident is blamed on bus driver of Lahore Transport Company.
MSc student Iram Manzoor and other students were waiting for public transport on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, eyewitness told police, adding that an LTC bus driver accelerated the bus before the passenger got in. As a result, Iram fall off the bus and died on the spot. She was resident of Muridke and was student of PU Statistics Department. The driver managed escape.
Many students were leaving the university campus when the accident took place in the afternoon. Some girls were seen weeping bitterly as they witnessed the fatal road accident. Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Moeen Nasir has expressed deep sense of sorrow over the sad demise. He prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.
Students took to the streets to protest for stern punishment to the person(s) responsible for the death. Protesting students blocked the road while some of the angry protesters tried to set ablaze the bus but the police reached the site and impounded the vehicle. The demonstrators chanted slogans against the government and traffic managers for what they called giving transporters free hand to kill public. They raised demand to take concrete safety steps.
The police handed over the body to family. A case was also registered against bus driver and the police say they were investigating the incident.
