RMU’s allied health institute holds first convocation

Rawalpindi – The 1st convocation of the Institute of Allied Health Sciences of Rawalpindi Medical University was held here on Thursday.

On the occasion, State Minister for Capital Administration and Development (CADD) Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary was the chief guest while Vice Chancellor RMU Dr Muhammad Umar, former principal of Rawalpindi Medical College Dr Mussadiq Khan, Dean of the Institute of Allied Health Sciences (IAHS) Dr Atifa Shuaib, faculty members, position holder students and their parents were also present.

As many as 350 students from sessions 2008-09 to 2012-13 received degrees and awards during the ceremony, including 52 gold medals for top position holders all over Punjab in the university exams conducted by the University of Health Sciences. Apart from the gold medals, the students were also awarded certificates of distinction in exams and awards for the best graduate in each session.

Dean IAHS Dr Atifa Shuaib, in her welcome address, said that the IAHS had been actively involved in imparting quality education and training to its students since 2008 in the fields of doctor physiotherapy (DPT), B.Sc. (Hons) medical lab technologies, medical imaging technologies, orthotics and optometry, resulting in the IAHS being now ranked among the top few institutes offering allied health sciences programmes.

She added that the IAHS students due to their efforts and keen interest in learning new technologies coupled with the training programmes, established keeping in mind the needs of the future, excelled in their fields not only in Pakistan but abroad as well. “Also, the IAHS will offer more post graduate programmes in different disciplines of allied health sciences,” she said.

The VC Dr Muhammad Umer, in his address, said that it was indeed a lifetime moment seeing the successful students who, he said, had proved their worth in their respective fields by their dedicated efforts and commitment. He said that it was an honour for the RMU to receive accreditation by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). “It is due to the fact that everyone at the RMU including faculty members and the students were up to the merit of Rawalpindi Medical University to achieve this status”, he said, adding that it was his wish to develop the RMU on scientific lines so that it could shine among the top universities of the world.

Dr Mussadiq, the former principal of Rawalpindi Medical College, expressed his pleasure seeing the RMU and IAHS flourishing.

State Minister for CAAD Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, speaking on the occasion, admired efforts of the faculty members and the students and congratulated the graduates on entering professional lives as the allied health professionals. He also appreciated efforts of the RMU and the IAHS for upholding standard of education and producing well-qualified and competent healthcare professionals. He stated that a nation who could not invest in future generations had no future at all and what could be better investments than investing in raising the standard of education of the youth. He said that he was proud to witness achievements of the young people, in the same university where he himself once studied. He assured his utmost support for the RMU, IAHS and the students in his capacity as a minister to help in further progress of the institutions. At the end, RMU VC Dr Muhammad Umer awarded shields to guests.
