UN help sought to promote research, innovation culture

ISLAMABAD –  Government has asked United Nations to provide technical assistance in promoting the culture of research and innovation in the country.

During a meeting with Under Secretary General, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Dr Shamshad Akhtar, federal minister for science and technology and defense production Rana Tanveer Hussain said that Pakistan has taken a lot of initiatives to promote the culture of research and innovation in the country, and is focusing on building state-of-the-art technology parks.

He said NUST and COMSAT are already pursuing this initiative and Pakistan would appreciate if UN’s Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) provide technical assistance in these initiatives.

Dr Shamshad Akhtar appreciated the role of ministry of science and technology in promotion of research and innovation culture in the country. She also ensured her organizational support to Pakistan to ensure better regional connectivity and socio-economic development for the entire region. She asked the minister to provide the list of best researchers/scientists of Pakistan so that UNESCAP could coordinate with them to explore new avenues of cooperation especially for the development of science and technology, not only for Pakistan but the whole region, said the under secretary general.

Rana Tanveer Hussain said that UNESCAP has already assisted many countries in the region and its assistance to Pakistan to uplift science and technology sector will be a commendable gesture.
