PTI demands contempt proceedings against Nawaz

LAHORE/Islamabad – PTI’s Information Secretary Shafqat Mehmood yesterday urged the Supreme Court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Mian Nawaz Sharif for his tirade against the judiciary.

“Mian Nawaz Sharif has committed contempt of court by his open declaration of war against the judiciary.

“The Supreme Court must initiate contempt proceedings against him”, he said while addressing a news conference here.

Shafqat believed that court was observing utmost restraint in Nawaz Sharif’s case.

“We demand that SC should issue contempt notice to Nawaz Sharif and award him punishment for his contemptuous remarks”, he said.

PTI leader recalled that Supreme Court had been calling people in contempt of court in the past even in respect of cases which were less severe than Nawaz Sharif’s case.

Shafqat said that PTI would launch a counter-movement in support of the judiciary if the PML-N chief initiated an anti-judiciary drive.

He alleged that Mian Nawaz Sharif was maligning the judges under a well thought out conspiracy to tarnish country’s image at the international level.

“The motu gang is browbeating the judiciary to get decisions of their choice. It is because they fear they will lose all their properties in Pakistan and in London if the decisions come on merit”, he remarked.

He said that Nawaz Sharif was trying to weaken the case of Kulbushan Jadev by defaming the judiciary.

Shafqat also accused Nawaz Sharif of trying to give the impression that judiciary was acting on the behest of some hidden forces.

Replying to a question, the PTI’s spokesperson said that his party had reservations over the present Election Commission which should be reconstituted by putting in place new members.

Answering another question, he said that Maulana Fazalur Rehman was opposing the merger of FATA into KPK to save his politics. He also alleged that JUI-F chief was blackmailing the government on FATA issue.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has decided to give a tough time to the government inside and outside the parliament over the delay in introducing the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas reforms and the merger of the region with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday instructed the parliamentary leaders of his party, both in the Senate and the National Assembly, to raise their voice in an effective manner in both the houses of the parliament against the “delaying tactics of the government in introducing [the] Fata reforms bill in the parliament.”

An officer bearer of the PTI’s Central Media Department said that party chief had instructed the central deputy secretary-general of the PTI, Murad Saeed, to devise a separate strategy to raise the issue of merger of the Fata at the national level, and in the parliament, effectively, and to “expose the delaying tactics of the ruling PML-N.”

According to a statement issued by the PTI, the party chief had instructed PTI MNA Murad Saeed that the government should be given one more chance to introduce the Fata reforms bill in the National Assembly till the end of the present session of the Lower House.

“After the session, [the] PTI will adopt [a] tough stance on the issue and no leniency would be dealt with the government,” it said.

The statement quoting Murad Saeed said that the government would have face severe reaction in case of more delay.

He said that the people of the Fata and the KP wanted merger of the tribal region with the province.

“[The] PML-N had promised the people of the Fata in the 2013 general elections to give them their due rights and give them representation in the KP Assembly,” Saeed said.

He said that the only way to give representation to the Fata in the KP Assembly was its merger.

Saeed said that the mainstreaming of the Fata was also part of the National Action Plan against counter terrorism.

The federal government has no reason for delay in the merger after the approval of the cabinet meeting, he concluded.
