Delimitation of constituencies to be completed by May 3: ECP

ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan has said that it will complete the process of delimitation of constituencies by May 3, 2018.

The ECP Secretary, Babar Yaqoob, while talking to the media after an ECP-led session, said that work would start from January 15th and would be completed within three and a half months.

He said that 45 days had been reserved for “suggestion round” also starting from January 15th. During the suggestion round input will be sought from the provinces.

The ECP Secretary said that the provincial governments had been informed that no change would take place in any of the union or District Councils.

Will send summary of election date to the President after completion of Assembly’s tenure, Yaqoob added.

The session, chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sardar Raza, was also attended by all four provincial Election Commissioners, Chief Secretaries, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman and the Statistics Secretary.

The participants reviewed issues concerning the condition of polling stations, electoral staff and other facilities, and also gave recommendations on installation of cameras in the constituencies.

On December 20th, the Constitutional Amendment Bill regarding delimitation of constituencies was passed in Senate, removing the obstruction in elections next year.  About 82 members of the Senate voted in the favour of the Bill, while no Senate member voted against it.

The Bill known as Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2017, pertains to fresh delimitation of the constituencies in accordance with the provisional results of the latest census for the upcoming general elections scheduled for 2018.

In light of the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2017, Punjab will lose nine seats in the National Assembly, while Islamabad will get one, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa five, and Balochistan three more seats.

However, the NA seats for the Fata and Sindh will remain unchanged.
