Rally against rising air pollution

GUJRANWALA – A rally against rising air pollution was taken out under the leadership of Mayor Municipal Corporation (MC) Sheikh Sarwat Ikram here the other day.

Hundreds of citizens and schoolchildren participated in the rally. They were holding banners against pollution. The rally was brought out from the MC office. The participants marched different roads and reached Sheranwala Bagh where the rally culminated.

Addressing the participants, Sheikh Sarwat said that poisonous smoke discharged from factories causes dangerous diseases amongst the people. He said the government has been trying its best to control air pollution, adding that the factory owners should also cooperate with the government in this regard. “They should not allow the use of banned material in their factories,” he added.

Dozens of unpaid employees of Gujranwala Waste Management Company (GWMC) staged a protest demonstration on Saturday. The protesters chanted slogans against the GWMC higher-ups. “Flouting the government’s orders, the GWMC officers have not paid us salaries before Christmas,” they alleged. They demanded the GWMC managing director release their salaries so that they could celebrate Christmas in a befitting way.
