Youth dies after inhaling toxic fumes at departmental store

KARACHI – A young man, the sole breadwinner for his family, died while several others fell unconscious after inhaling toxic fumes at a departmental store here in North Nazimabad on Saturday.

According to details, 21-year-old Yahya Fahim Ali, who used to work at a departmental store in North Nazimabad, lost consciousness along with at least six others while working inside the store.

All the victims were immediately shifted to a hospital where Ali breathed his last during treatment while the others were later discharged after the provision of first aid.

The store’s employees said that the incident had taken place on the night between Friday and Saturday when Ali had gone into the storeroom for some work after the closure of the store.

There he fell unconscious. The other staffers reached the storeroom to rescue him, they said, and added, however, all the six others also fell unconscious.

The victims, particularly Ali started vomiting and all were shifted to the hospital.

Police said that the victims were exposed to a heavy stench of pest control fumigation. “The store was fumigated between Thursday and Friday and Ali had his meal in the store’s warehouse despite he was asked not to have a food inside the storeroom,” said North Nazimabad DSP Naeem Khan, and added, “Apparently, the incident occurred due to fumigation.”

Although police later also held the store manager and fumigation supervisor and two others, however, no case had been registered till the filing of this news.

On the other hand, the store manager denied the allegations, saying that the store was fumigated before the arrival of the store staffers.

The officer said that no case had been registered as police was waiting for the victim’s family to approach it for the purpose.

The deceased was the resident of Liaquatabad and was the only breadwinner for his family.

He was laid to rest at a graveyard in Paposh Nagar.
